What are the differences between value stream mapping and business process mapping?

The term value stream mapping is often used interchangeably with business process mapping. Although the terms are related, they are not the same thing. Value stream mapping (VSM) mainly focuses on analysing material and information flows to identify waste and optimise production processes. Business process mapping, on the other hand, covers a broader range of activities, focusing on different aspects of a company's operations, such as customer interactions or resource management. Both approaches are complementary and can be used in parallel for better organisational performance.

The ability to organise processes effectively is crucial to success, especially in a rapidly changing business environment. Our Value Stream Mapping (VSM) training is an excellent opportunity to learn how to identify and eliminate waste in manufacturing and service processes. Through the use of visualisation techniques, participants will be able to better understand their processes, allowing them to optimise and increase efficiency. By choosing our training, you are investing in the competence development of your team and in the future of your organisation.

The benefits you will gain from attending our Value Stream Mapping training are:

  • Process visualisation - you will learn to create value stream maps to help identify areas for improvement.
  • Eliminating waste - you will gain the skills needed to identify and eliminate unnecessary steps and activities in processes.
  • Increased efficiency - process optimisation leads to shorter turnaround times and lower costs.
  • Improved communication - visualising processes facilitates communication between teams and increases employee engagement.
  • Applicable across industries - VSM techniques are versatile and can be used in a variety of industries.

Our value stream mapping workshop is aimed at:

  • Employees responsible for process management,
  • Executives who wish to implement lean management principles,
  • Lean specialists and process engineers,
  • Quality specialists and engineers,
  • Those involved in optimising manufacturing processes and information flows.
  • The training is tailored for both beginners and those who want to systematise their knowledge of value stream mapping.

The training lasts one day and covers the following topics:

  1. Introduction to value stream mapping - Participants will learn the basic concepts of VSM and its relevance to the organisation as well as the basics of Lean Management and concepts such as added value, muda, types of waste, types of flow, impact of flow on company costs, product families, the role of the value stream manager.
  2. Process visualisation techniques - we will discuss the different visualisation techniques that can be used when mapping a value stream, the definitions, parameters and icons used to build a VSM, the identification of process types, how information flows between process steps, the differences between an internal and external stream.
  3. Value stream mapping - Participants will learn step-by-step how to create a value stream map for their processes, learning about the stages of mapping, from analysing the current state, to designing the future state, to planning the implementation of change, as well as communication between process participants and proper data collection.
  4. Analysis of the current state - In this section, we will focus on customer needs and expectations, supplier requirements, identifying existing processes, collecting data, visualising material and information flows, inventory levels and process lead times, and identifying areas for improvement.
  5. Identification of waste - participants will learn how to recognise waste and its impact on organisational efficiency, identify areas for improvement, define production rates that meet customer demand, define the characteristics of an ideal and effective value stream.
  6. Optimisation and future state map - Participants will learn how to select the optimum flow type, define stock levels, balance demand fluctuations, create a map of the optimised flow, and simplify the flow of information in the process.
  7. Development of an action plan - At the end of the training, participants will create an action plan to implement the improvements resulting from the VSM analysis, including the sequence of implementation of each change, the implementation schedule, responsibilities and deadlines, how to monitor progress and the effectiveness of the solutions.

Anna, Process Management Specialist:
"The value stream mapping training was extremely practical. Thanks to the tools used, I was able to immediately implement the new approach in my team, which allowed me to significantly improve processes and eliminate waste."

Thomas, Production Team Leader:
"The value stream mapping opened my eyes to hidden problems in our processes. With the training and visualisation of the manufacturing processes, we have been able to optimise the workflow and information, which has made the whole team more efficient."

Eve, Chief Operating Officer:
"Thanks to the VSM workshop, we were able not only to see what our value stream looks like, but also to implement consistent standards to improve processes across the organisation. The effects were visible almost immediately and translated into better company performance."

What are the entry requirements for attending the training?

There are no prerequisites; the training is designed for basic and intermediate levels.

Can the training be adapted to the specifics of our company?

Yes, the training programme can be tailored to your specific industry and the needs of your organisation.

What materials will I receive after the training?

Each participant will receive training materials and examples of value stream maps to use in practice.

Is it possible to carry out the training in our company?
